Dubai’s RTA Deploys Drones to Enhance Safety in Dubai Metro Tunnel Inspections

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has begun deploying drone technology to inspect the operational efficiency of metro tunnels, strengthening safety standards while improving maintenance efficiency across the rail network. The initiative reduces the need for manual inspections in confined and high-risk environments, significantly limiting staff exposure to potential hazards.

Traditionally, tunnel inspections required maintenance teams to enter narrow, low-visibility spaces, often during restricted operating windows. By using drones equipped with high-resolution cameras, inspections can now be conducted remotely, allowing engineers to assess tunnel conditions without placing personnel in potentially dangerous situations. The new approach has reduced inspection time by up to 60 percent, while improving the accuracy and consistency of collected data.

The drones provide a wider field of vision and detailed imagery, enabling early detection of structural issues, water leaks, or equipment deterioration. This supports preventive maintenance strategies and reduces the likelihood of unexpected failures that could affect passenger safety or service continuity. Automated data capture and digital reporting further enhance decision-making and response times.

The initiative also aligns with the RTA’s broader efforts to adopt smart technologies that prioritise workforce protection and passenger safety. Future plans include integrating artificial intelligence to analyse inspection data, strengthening predictive maintenance capabilities, and further reducing operational risk.

By minimising human exposure to hazardous environments and improving oversight of infrastructure, the RTA is reinforcing safety as a core pillar of Dubai Metro operations.
