Oman Plans $275M AI Special Economic Zone
Oman’s first dedicated AI special economic zone is expected to attract around RO 106 million ($275 million) in investment. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin in late 2027.
The Artificial Intelligence Special Zone was established in Muscat under a Royal Decree in 2026. It will focus on artificial intelligence, data infrastructure, robotics and advanced technology industries. The project forms part of Oman’s wider effort to expand its digital economy and attract international technology investment.
According to the Oman Observer, the zone will occupy around 104,000 square metres in Seeb. The site is close to Muscat International Airport and the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Authority
Data centers and advanced automation
Plans include a data center and cloud infrastructure, robotics and prototyping laboratories, and industrial automation hubs. The zone will also include a dedicated center for AI research and applications.
Construction of the first phase is due to start in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The zone’s developers are also reportedly in talks with major international technology companies, including Microsoft and IBM. They are also considering partnerships with international universities to support research, training and technology development.
Companies operating in the zone will have access to incentives and exemptions under Oman’s Special Economic Zones and Free Zones framework. The government sees the project as part of its strategy to strengthen Oman’s role as a regional technology hub.
The initiative also supports Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s National Digital Economy Program. The program aims to increase the digital economy’s contribution to GDP over the coming years.
