Abu Dhabi Deploys AI and Satellite Technology to Detect Illegal Waste Dumping

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched a pilot project that uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to identify and monitor illegal waste dumping sites across the emirate, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in the UAE.

According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the project integrates advanced AI algorithms with satellite image analysis to automatically scan large areas and detect environmental violations. The move represents a shift from traditional, labour-intensive field inspections to a data-driven, predictive monitoring model designed to improve environmental protection and regulatory efficiency.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, said the initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies to enhance environmental governance. She noted that the project aligns with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 and supports the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071, particularly in green innovation, science, and technology.

She added that the use of AI and satellite technology enables the agency to anticipate environmental challenges, improve environmental quality, and strengthen long-term sustainability through digital transformation.

The pilot phase was implemented in the Al Bukariyah area of the Al Ain Region, where the system achieved an accuracy rate exceeding 90 percent in identifying illegal dumping sites. During the pilot, the AI-powered platform detected 150 dumping locations, compared with just 43 sites identified through conventional field monitoring methods over the same period.

In addition to pinpointing dumping sites, the system can classify waste types and track changes at affected locations over time. This capability enables EAD to analyse dumping patterns more effectively, identify potential sources, and develop more effective prevention and enforcement strategies.

Following detection, EAD coordinated with relevant authorities to remove the waste and rehabilitate impacted areas, while maintaining ongoing monitoring to prevent repeat violations. The agency said the technology also strengthens its regulatory and legislative role by enabling faster response times and more accurate environmental assessments.

The project was presented at the International Solid Waste Association World Conference 2025 in Argentina, where it received positive feedback from international environmental experts. Building on the pilot’s success, EAD plans to expand the system across the entire Emirate of Abu Dhabi and develop a centralised, innovative environmental monitoring platform based on AI and satellite data.

The expansion is expected to support integrated government operations and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s broader sustainability and smart governance objectives.
