Nedap marks 25 years of AEOS access control

As AEOS marks its 25th anniversary, Nedap says the biggest lesson from two and a half decades of access control development is that long-term value comes from systems designed to adapt rather than remain static.

Originally launched in 2000 as one of the first web-based physical access control platforms, AEOS has evolved alongside major changes in the security industry. According to Nedap, today’s access control systems must integrate seamlessly with technologies such as video surveillance, biometrics, HR platforms and identity management solutions.

The company also notes that physical access control is increasingly becoming part of broader enterprise security ecosystems, supporting business continuity, regulatory compliance and digital identity strategies.

The systems that last and bring the most value in security are the ones designed to change.

The company argues that open architecture has become essential as organisations increasingly require scalable, interoperable security ecosystems instead of isolated, vendor-specific systems. Nedap also highlights the industry’s shift from door-centric security towards identity-based access management, where permissions are linked to an individual’s role, context and risk profile.

Another key trend identified by the company is the growing importance of user experience. Mobile credentials, intuitive workflows and low-friction access are becoming critical for maintaining both security and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, Nedap believes security platforms must be continuously updated to accommodate changing regulations, hybrid environments and cloud-based services. The company concludes that organisations will achieve the greatest long-term return from security systems that are built to evolve rather than require replacement as operational needs change.
