Siemens, Desert Technologies Launch Platform for Solar and Smart Infrastructure
Siemens and Desert Technologies have launched Capton Energy, a new joint venture designed to develop and invest in solar and smart infrastructure projects across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. According to Siemens, the Dubai-based platform will target both existing and greenfield projects and aims to build an aggregate portfolio of more than 1GW.
The company said Capton Energy will focus primarily on solar projects in the 20MW to 100MW range, while drawing on the technology and development capabilities of both shareholders.
From a smart technologies perspective, the initiative is positioned around more than solar generation alone. Siemens said the platform will support projects that combine renewables with digital technologies, storage and distributed energy models, including sustainable mini-grids intended to expand access to reliable electricity in underserved markets.
The company said Capton Energy will focus primarily on solar projects in the 20MW to 100MW range, while drawing on the technology and development capabilities of both shareholders. Siemens is participating through Siemens Financial Services, while Saudi Arabia-based Desert Technologies brings experience as a solar PV and smart infrastructure group that has completed more than 40 solar projects in 22 countries.
In the press release, Desert Technologies described smart infrastructure as an integrated model built on renewables, storage and digital systems, with the potential to support wider shifts in mobility, energy access and sustainable development. Siemens also framed the venture as part of the broader move toward more flexible and sustainable energy systems in high-growth markets.
For the region, the launch underscores how smart infrastructure is increasingly being tied to energy investment, not only through utility-scale solar but through digitally managed, distributed systems that can improve resilience, efficiency and service delivery where conventional grid infrastructure remains limited. That final point is an inference based on Siemens’ description of the platform’s focus areas and target markets.
